Chocolate Football Cake Pops: Easy 10-Minute Game Day Treat

  • Author: Luciana
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

These stick-free chocolate football cake pops are the ultimate game day hack. Made with store-bought cake mix and vanilla frosting, they are bite-sized, mess-free, and take only 10 minutes of active time to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) Yellow Cake Mix
  • ⅓ cup (80ml) Vegetable Oil
  • 2 large Eggs
  • ¾ cup (180ml) Water
  • 1 jar (16 oz / 450g) Vanilla Frosting
  • 12 oz (340g) White Chocolate Chips
  • 2 oz (56g) Dark Chocolate Chips
  • 1 tablespoon Lard or Shortening
  • Black Food Coloring Gel
  • Parchment Paper
  • Mini M&Ms or Chocolate Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Mix cake mix, oil, eggs, and water according to box instructions. Pour into pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. Let cool completely.
  3. Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Add vanilla frosting to the crumbs (start with half the jar) and mix until it resembles a thick dough.
  5. Roll the mixture into 1-inch diameter balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Melt white chocolate chips with lard/shortening in 30-second microwave intervals, stirring until smooth.
  7. Dip frozen cake balls into the melted white chocolate, tap off excess, and place back on parchment paper.
  8. Melt dark chocolate chips separately and mix in black food coloring gel.
  9. Pipe laces onto the white chocolate balls using a piping bag or Ziploc bag with a cut corner.
  10. Let the cake pops sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes until the chocolate is fully set.

Notes

Ensure cake balls are frozen solid before dipping to prevent them from falling apart. Use gel food coloring instead of liquid to prevent the chocolate from seizing. Adding lard or shortening to the white chocolate helps it thin out for a smoother dip and a shinier finish. These can be made 1-2 days ahead and stored in an airtight container.
